Oldest collegian flew secret war missions „„ By Julia Evans AT 101-YEARS-OLD, Naylor Hillary will be the oldest collegian at the St Andrew’s centenary this weekend. Like many of the college’s 14,000 previous students, he has had an interesting past. Mr Hillary is one of the last living veterans of the Royal Air Force’s Tempsford 138 Special Duties Squadron, which he was a navigator for in World War 2. THe squadron specialised in dropping resistance fighters and their supplies behind enemy lines in a Mk IV Short Stirling. Its existence was so classified, it wasn’t

even acknowledged until 1989, and the full story has still not come to light. At the end of last year Mr Hillary was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur medal (right) by the French ambassador for his services. He doesn’t talk about it much – life is a lot quieter for him now. He reads the paper each morning, takes long walks and goes to church every Sunday without fail. THere’s an All Blacks jersey hanging on his wall signed by Richie McCaw. Mr Hillary’s grandson organised it for his 100th birthday. He was chuffed, he watches the rugby whenever it’s on. But Mr Hillary said his career really began when he started attending St Andrew’s in 1929. “I had three older sisters so mum and dad packed me off to board at St Andrew’s to toughen me up,â€? he said. THe cold showers, morning runs around the school paddock and open air sleeping quarters did the trick, he said. •Turn to page 4

We have comprehensive coverage of this weekend’s 100th anniversary of the school, which includes a profile on the college rector Christine Leighton, who has been at St Andrew’s for 10 years now. On the front page, reporter Julia Evans caught up with 101-year-old Naylor Hillary, the college’s oldest old boy going to the festivities. During the war, Naylor was part of a secret operation which dropped people and supplies behind enemy lines in France to help the Resistance. Naylor was a navigator on those missions, a critical part of the jigsaw. Pinpoint accuracy was needed to get the people to the right spot and away from the Germans. $30,000 funding loss for centre By Julia Evans FUNDS EARMARKED for the Shirley Community Centre rebuild will instead go towards housing a social worker at the Redwood Plunket rooms. Initially, $100,000 was included in the city council’s 2017-18 draft Annual Plan for the centre’s rebuild, but that has been reduced to $70,000. The $30,000 difference is going towards repairing the Redwood building, which will be used mostly by a community board-funded social worker, as well as Plunket. Papanui-Innes Community Board chairwoman Ali Jones said the Plunket room repairs are needed urgently. But there is absolutely no way the community board will endorse any hindrance to the Shirley Community Centre’s rebuild, she said. “We’re still dealing with a lot of mental health issues in our ward, particularly in those areas where there is clear deprivation,” she said. Ms Jones said the Canterbury District Health Board should step up more in funding social workers but she is aware it is very stretched.

The shift of money won’t affect the community centre rebuild’s progress as it is still in the pre-build and design stage. The money will be made up further down the track as it is only being moved for the 201718 Annual Plan period. “Funding for that community centre is not even open for negotiation,” she said. The centre’s funding has
already come under scrutiny several times to the frustration of the community. At the city council’s meeting, board members and city councillors Pauline Cotter (left) and Mike Davidson came out in support of the amendment.

Cr Cotter said there’s a great need for the rooms in Redwood immediately and it runs a really supportive programme. The Shirley Community Centre was damaged beyond repair in the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and was demolished in early 2012. It has since been confirmed that the new centre will be built on the same site on Shirley Rd.

In Brief CYCLEWAY FEEDBACK The city council has begun public consultation over the planned Nor’West Arc cycleway. It is currently seeking feedback on the initial stages of the cycleway from Cashmere through to Canterbury University. Consultation on the remaining section, which will see it eventually connect to the Northern Line cycleway near St James Park in Papanui, will begin later this year. The city council said the planned route aimed to connect the Heathcote River and future Ōpāwaho River cycle routes to the University of Canterbury. It will provide a safe, direct and attractive cycle route, while minimising potential impacts on residents and businesses. PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD Burnside High School student Wenlin Zhang has taken out the Canon Eyecon high school photography award. She won $3000 worth of photography equipment and a workshop at the Queenstown Centre for Creative Photography with Canon. Her school also received $2000 worth of equipment, a workshop for current photography students and a $1000 Canon printer. Wenlin submitted a series of photos about her experience moving from China to New Zealand with her family.

Oldest collegian flew secret war missions •From page 1 Mr Hillary was born and raised in Christchurch. He lived in Opawa before being going to St Andrew’s. He played rugby and tennis, but it was an affinity for mathematics that Mr Hillary said he took from his time at St Andrew’s. “Because I was interested in mathematics, when I had a chance with the air force, I went on as a navigator. You were calculating all the time,” he said He said he doesn’t think he was a very bright student. Mr Hillary was 18 when he left St Andrew’s to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force and go on to take part in the Royal Air Force Tempsford squadron. “I have very pleasant memories of my time there,” he said. Even beyond his working life, Mr Hillary has had a special connection with his old school. His son David attended the college in the 60s and three grandsons, Gareth, Rhys and James Bissland after that – even now his six-year-old great grandson, Henry, is one of the college’s youngest pupils. Time capsule won’t be opened until bicentenary ST ANDREW’S College students have buried a time capsule to mark the school’s centenary. Last week, a preparatory class from the college had the privilege of burying the capsule on the school’s grounds. It is to be opened in 100 years. It has been specially crafted so it won’t rot in the ground and

Christine Leighton Our People St Andrew’s first female rector Christine Leighton is rector of St Andrew’s College, which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary this weekend. She talks to Julia Evans about the importance of the school’s community and how it plans to mark its centenary So, beginning with a bit of background, how did you come to be rector at St Andrew’s? I’ve been working in education in New Zealand for 37 years and I’ve had a wide-ranging experience through New Zealand schools. I’ve taught at state and integrated schools, single sex and co-educational schools, but this is my first time working at an independent school in New Zealand. I’ve come to my 10th year as rector at St Andrew’s, but before this, I was principal of St Hilda’s Collegiate School in Dunedin for nine years. It’s hard to believe 10 years have gone. Obviously, I’ve been rector through some interesting times but I’ve absolutely loved it. What is it about St Andrew’s that drew you in? Did you think it would be a new challenge in your career? I was attracted back to St Andrew’s largely because it is a co-educational college. I’d been educated in a co-educational school myself and I believe that it’s the best way to prepare young people for their futures. It’s also a natural environment for students to be in, so I was delighted to come back. Christchurch seemed like a nice place to come to and St Andrew’s has a great reputation. I was also attracted to the idea of independent education, where you have more resource available to you and more opportunity to do things a bit differently. I was an english teacher before I moved into leadership positions and I had taught at an

independent international school in England for a year earlier in my career, which was an experience I really enjoyed. So after all that, I decided to take on the challenge to see what I could lead St Andrew’s to be. Have you taught at St Andrew’s before or were you a student yourself? No, I’m from Auckland and I did my english degree at Auckland University. Actually, I did my post-graduate teaching diploma here in Christchurch at what was known as the teacher’s college back then, and my firstever teaching placement was at St Andrew’s. I was here for a whole six weeks in 1980. Some of the boys who were in my english
class that year are now on the staff here. So teaching has been a big part of your life? Yes, actually my husband’s also a teacher at St Margaret’s College. He teaches chemistry so we’ve been in education all our lives and we met when we were both teachers at our first teaching jobs at Nayland College in Nelson. We have two sons. One of them, Tom, teaches primary school in London, he’s doing his OE teaching over there. My son Alex just got his first job in geological engineering after finishing his masters at Canterbury. Alex went to St Andrew’s for his final three years when I was there, he’s very proud of being a
St Andrew’s boy. When the kids were young, it was an interesting juggle. I was a principal when they were nine and six, they grew up knowing mum and dad were busy. We’ve just managed somehow. I do think it’s an important message for women that you can do this, but there is sacrifice, you can’t have everything. I’m sure there are things the boys missed out on in terms of my time and attention, but it doesn’t seem to have done them any harm. I’m very proud of them. You’ve been rector for some really interesting times with the earthquakes and now the centenary. How has that been? It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster really. When I get a chance to
look back on it, I’m sure I will have a sense of satisfaction, but at the moment, I never stop. The world changes rapidly, circumstances change rapidly – it’s the kind of job where you don’t get too much time to stop and feel that sense of satisfaction, you’ve just got to keep going since you’re always focusing on the next thing. Every year is different, every year there are new contexts that you’re working in, and every year we have about 250 new students come into the college so it’s always changing. As St Andrew’s first female rector, did you celebrate International Women’s Day last week? I’m the 10th rector to be here, but the first woman to be rector. That’s quite an achievement really. How important do you think St Andrew’s is to the wider Christchurch community? We are a big community. We’ve got 1450 students and 13,000 old collegians, so it’s a huge community, but we work really hard at not being inward looking. So this weekend is the celebration for the centenary – that must be a great feeling? We’ve been working towards this for four or five years and part of celebrating the centenary is knowing and understanding the stories and history behind the college. We’ve really spent that five years learning about those stories. Recently, we gave all the students in the college a centenary badge, they were really excited to get those badges and they wear them with pride. What does the centenary mean for the community? We actually launched the centenary in September of last year, so we’ve already had a number of events, which has been great to warm us up for the big weekend. The school started on March 17, 1917.

involved in more college history That was the dedication service of the first year of St Andrew’s so that is the day that every year we celebrate our founder’s day on. We’ve planned a whole weekend of events that will engage all of our college and the wider community. We have present students coming and that’s from preschool to year 13, we have recent collegians who have left in the last five or six years right up to those who were here in the 1930s also coming. Several people in their 90s are coming back and the oldest collegian that we know of, who is 101, will be cutting the cake at the founder’s day assembly. We have parents that want to come to events and old collegians of all various ages – some coming from as far away as England for the weekend. What’s on the itinerary for the weekend? On Friday, we’re having a college tour for 700 guests who are also coming to the founder’s day assembly. Then in the afternoon, we’re holding our own highland games and a cocktail evening for 1200 collegians at the college. On Saturday, we have a whole college fete, which is a huge event and all the students are involved in it. We’ve got displays, stalls, races, rides and entertainment – all the

music and cultural groups are performing on that day as well. Later on Saturday, there’s a gala dinner at Horncastle Arena for 1500 people, which is the largest sit down dinner in Christchurch since 2009. Then on Sunday, we’re having a chapel service,
cricket game and old collegians concert in the college hall and, on Monday, there will be a big sense of relief and achievement. That’s a busy weekend, what do you want people to take out of it? One of the things we wanted

to do was tell our stories and we know the best way to do that is visually. We’ve created a timeline of 100 years of history and that is absolutely fantastic for everyone to engage with. We’ve got a centennial book and a centennial movie, which is 15 minutes long, so we’ll launch that as part of our weekend and have viewings. I’m seeing the preview today, which is very exciting. In our gymnasium, we’re launching 100 years of sport, where we’re celebrating more than 80 collegians, staff and present students who have played or been in the top of their sport. They had to have been either in the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games or the world championships. Then we’ve also had a centennial orchestral piece written by an old collegian, which is 11 minutes long, has our college song incorporated and tells our story through the music. Then, a preparatory class has created a time capsule, which was buried yesterday. It has been hermetically sealed in a
specially-made box to preserve it for the next 100 years. So you what do you think the next 100 years has in store for St Andrew’s? The centenary is about looking back and being grateful for what we have been given. We’re celebrating 100 years and where we’ve got to now from our very humble beginnings to the extent which we’ve been able to develop. We want to show gratitude for the legacy we’ve inherited from the people that have come before us. But the theme is what our legacy is moving forward, and what we now have to contribute to ensure the people of the future are going to have the same opportunities we’ve enjoyed. I have had the thought that maybe there will be a five-year-old here at the moment who will still be alive for the 200th anniversary. There must be something special about the college’s community if people are coming from near and far to celebrate? There’s something very humbling about being part of this community and the opportunity to see and understand the impact education has had on people’s lives. There’s the sense that these people are reconnecting because they want to say thank you and show some gratitude and that’s wonderful. Often that comes with maturity and at a later stage in your life. But the thing I love to see is that a lot of our old collegians, who are only just out of school, have that same feeling. I think that’s quite strange and unusual for young people to want to come back. We’ve got an unbelievable number of recently left old collegians coming back for this weekend and that makes me feel really happy. I think that has to reflect the gratitude they have to have come here in the first place, because students do realise how fortunate they are to be here. But to me, it reflects the amazing time that they had when they came here so they just want to reconnect.

Running with hospital bed for a good cause
SEVERAL retirement village staff will run in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate while pushing a hospital bed to raise money for a local charity. The Merivale Retirement Village will donate the money it raises to Nurse Maude Hospice after the run on Sunday. The bed has been modified so it can be moved around the 6km outdoor course without breaking. It was given to the retirement village by InvaCare New Zealand and has been decorated by children from Angelcare Preschool and Nursery in St Albans. Five Nurse Maude Hospice staff and 12 nurses and staff from the retirement village will be running with the bed and collecting donations along the way. Retirement village regional manager Jon Amesbury said it wants be involved in community projects and connect with the community, so the staff have chosen to run The Star City2Surf.

But she said it was only possible because of the help she received, and the diagnosis tools provided by the Canterbury Bowel and Liver Trust. “The things that finally got me well cost a lot of money, so I wanted to give something back,” she said. She has already raised almost $1500 through people sponsoring her run. She said she had never done anything like the City2Surf before, and after being sick for so long being able to cross the finish line would feel like a giant victory. “I’m sure there will be tears,” she said. “I finally feel like I’ve got my life back. I can’t go for drinks or dinner like normal, but I am still able to work, which is amazing.” She works for Bupa as an activity organiser, and said they held her job for her, in spite of the fact she was off work for three months. She has also rescheduled her wedding, and plans to marry her partner of eight years, Craig Corboy, this December. “I’m determined I’m going to get down the aisle this time,” she said.
By Gabrielle Stuart JUST A year ago, Leanne Crawford could barely walk, had lost 30kg, was constantly sick, and had to put both her work and her wedding on hold – and she had no idea what was going wrong. This weekend, she will take on the 14km The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event, which she will walk, and she won’t be doing it alone. Her partner, friends and many of the nurses who helped her get on her feet again plan to do the walk beside her – 41 people in total – raising money to help others with the same condition get treatment. The 30-year-old began feeling sick in 2014, but initially doctors did not know what was wrong. It took almost two years for her to be diagnosed and find a treatment, because she was facing a complex mix of parasites in her intestines, crohn’s disease and endometriosis. For much of that time she couldn’t work, and she had to postpone her wedding three times. “It was like my life was turned upside down. It was really, really frightening just not knowing what was going on,” she said. ACHIEVERS DONATION: The Rotary Club of Papanui with members of the community groups they donated more than $16,000 to.
Organisations receive grants THE ROTARY Club of Papanui raised more than $16,000 for local community groups through its annual gift-wrapping stations at Northlands. The stations were staffed by volunteers from the club and 10 local community group teams. In February the club held a special presentation event at the Papanui Club on Sawyers Arms Rd where they meet every Thursday. Club member Verdi van Beek said each group expressed its thanks to the club and Northlands management for making the fundraising opportunity available. All 10 groups were presented with cheques of $1670. Allenvale School said it is
going to provide more sensory processing equipment for the children at the school. St John Cranmer Section cadet programme, St John No 3 preparatory youth group and the Belfast Redwood Anglican Parish Church youth group will spend their money on camp-ins, outdoor learning experiences for young people an Easter camp. Papanui High School will provide funds for its Japanese language students’ trip to Japan, where they will experience the culture and foster a better understanding of the language. The Papanui High School Parent Teacher Association said it will use its money to assist with events at the school. Soroptimists is going to pro-

Last week I talked about my frustration at the number of people still burning rubbish and vegetation in ultra-dry conditions. So what happens? It rains and then instantly turns cold enough to say summer’s over, welcome to winter. And people start lighting their fireplaces, causing more calls, in one case from a disgruntled neighbour, and in another from the house where the fire had been lit because the smoke wasn’t exiting up the chimney, but was filling the home up instead. So in what seems an unusually early cold season, the recommendation is to get your chimney flue swept – now. Smoky chimneys are one thing, but just about every year at the
onset of winter we have house fires caused by fireplaces that have sat unused for six months. While we are at it, this is also certainly the time to have electric blankets checked and certified. There are a couple of appliance firms that provide this service quite cheaply. For peace of mind, it’s a strong recommendation from us that everyone should have the blanket checked annually. I haven’t mentioned kitchen fires for a while. That’s not because they haven’t been happening, but more because I don’t want to sound like a cracked record. One third of all house fires start in the kitchen. This week there were three, though unusually, none of them involved ambulance care for house occupants. Finally, we are just a few weeks from daylight saving ending. Stick smoke alarm batteries on the shopping list now!

Your Local Views Can we do things better? Frustrations around heavy roadworks in the north west are testing even the most patient drivers, says Ali Jones but she’s assuring residents there’s a logic behind it I am not the world’s most patient driver, as my children and husband will attest to. When the kids were little, they travelled with me a lot as we drove to meetings here and there. I’m not going to tell you what their first words were but I can’t think where they got them from. The roadworks in the Papanui-Innes area are testing even the most ‘well balanced’ amongst us right now. Whenever, there’s something that on the face of it seems to be illogical or could be done better, I’m the first to call or email a city council officer or our board support staff to find out more. This happened recently with the screamingly frustrating work going on at the Rutland and Westminster St corner and

further along Rutland St to Innes Rd. Why so long? Why so few people working? It helps doesn’t it, to have all the information before going off half-cocked. I was told in a very detailed and prompt response from the head of the cycleway projects that three strands of work are happening at once – the laying of fibre cables, the replacement or repair of wastewater and stormwater pipes and finally the cycleway construction. If these were done one after the other, it would take much longer and see roads dug up
that were sealed by the previous crews. Of course, there are always things we can do better – liaising more with businesses and residents face to face, providing good signage alerting customers to the fact shops are still open as well as proactively encouraging people to support the businesses at a tough time, there are three right there. I know our officers do that but sometimes we don’t consider enough things like how well a business owner can speak or read English, or whether they use the internet. Don’t get me wrong, most of the time we (and I mean the city council) do get it right but we don’t see those stories on the front page of the paper. We are a ‘can-do’ council and if there’s anything you think we can do better, tell us through our councillors and community board members. That’s what we are there for.

I joined our community in marking the sixth anniversary of the Canterbury earthquake at the memorial service and unveiling of the earthquake national memorial. We will always remember those who lost their lives on that terrible day.
I enjoyed getting involved in the launch of the Good Night, Sleep Tight charitable trust in Casebrook earlier this month. Trust members are working hard to ensure children in greater Christchurch have access to warm winter bedding and pyjamas, and I encourage everyone to support this great work.

All encouragement for biking is great. Once sports centre is built in the east I’ll like to accept this challenge if it has been initiated as a long term plan. Michael Rae – Good idea but how many bikes will start getting stolen. Anna Henderson – What a great initiative! Cathryn Lucy – I think they’re going the wrong way about this. People respond to instant gratification – so how about if they bike, they get a discount? The discount could be 20 per cent off, so really the same as biking five times and getting the sixth free. But they get something for it immediately, and thus are more motivated. What about a current bus pass being shown could get a discount of some kind too? I reckon it should be discounted for people who bike as people respond to instant gratification. Ten per cent off if you bus, 20 per cent off if you bike? I say 20 per cent because they want you to
bike five times to get a free pass for the sixth. Well, divide the cost of a free pass by five and spread it out over each session, and people are more likely to go as they get an instant reward for the effort. Paul Welford – Free entry for biking . . . walk home afterwards once your bikes been stolen. Heather Wilkins – We have a lot further to bike as well and one does need to be safe on the roads which often you aren’t. Christine Weston – Great idea but we have a lot further to bike from the east side so it should be based on distance travelled not times. New pre-school garden unveiled at Selwyn House THE NEW pre-school garden at Selwyn House School has been unveiled by artist and designer Jenny Gillies. Known for using flowers as inspiration for her costume work, Ms Gillies brought the pre-school garden to life when she arrived dressed as a bumble bee. Teachers were also dressed
for the occasion as flowers and pupils wore their own handmade crowns. Ms Gillies’ exhibition Enchanted Garden is currently showing in the tea kiosk at the Botanic Gardens. Her work has won multiple awards from the Montana World of Wearable Arts.

Retirement Village Fundraising For Local Hospice Merivale Retirement Village in Browns Road has a philosophy of creating an ‘organisational social conscience’, and is constantly looking for opportunities to give back and to engage with the local community, Regional Manager Jon Amesbury says. “Our directors and staff believe that aged-care facilities should strive to become hubs of their local communities and provide exciting opportunities for residents to be involved with local community projects,” Jon says. “To achieve this, we connect with local groups and organisations, with the aim of creating a more inclusive society for everyone.” The village has recently demonstrated its commitment to being a good neighbour by formally adopting

To kick start the fundraising, Merivale Retirement Village has organised an event they hope will prompt Christchurch people to give generously to the cause. The event, on March 19, involves pushing a specially adapted hospital bed around the 6K City2Surf route. Twelve Merivale Retirement Village nurses and staff and five Nurse Maude Hospice staff will push the adapted hospital bed as they run the City2Surf, collecting money in buckets along the way. The bed was adapted and donated by InvaCareNZ andhas had some custom decoration courtesy of the children of the Angelcare Preschool in Somme Street with their own artwork and designs.

St Andrew’s rowers defend Bell Cup By Gordon Findlater ST ANDREW’S College retained the Bell Cup for the most overall points at the South Island secondary school championships on Twizel’s Lake Ruataniwha. The winter-like conditions over the weekend didn’t slow down St Andrew’s, who came home with eight gold, three silver and a bronze medal. All of St Andrew’s gold medals came in the boys’ events. They won the under-15 coxed octuple sculls, under-15 coxed four, under-16 coxed eight, under-18 coxed four, under-15 coxed eight, under-16 coxed four and under-18 coxless pair oars. They also took out the much anticipated boys’ under-18 coxed eight in dominant fashion. St Andrew’s powered to gold more than six seconds clear of defending Maadi Cup champions Christ’s College in second, and Christchurch Boys’ High School in third. Even more remarkable was that the St Andrew’s crew broke the six-minute mark with a time of 5min 58.29sec. If the boys’ race was clear cut, the girls’ under-18 coxed eight was quite the opposite. Just over one second was all that separated gold from bronze.

school – winning eight gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Rangi Ruru director of rowing Mark Cotham said these were very pleasing results in the build up to the Maadi Cup, but there’s still a lot of water to go under the bridge and the girls will continue training hard over the next couple of
weeks. “This is a helpful check-up for us all as we look ahead to Maadi, but it is business as usual until then,” said Cotham. Schools will now turn their attention to the Maadi Cup, which takes place from March 27 to April 2. Results:

Burnside win Mainland title, aim to spike at nationals By Gordon Findlater BURNSIDE HIGH School have continued their winning ways as they build towards three straight national volleyball crowns. The Burnside girls’ team took out the Mainland secondary schools’ division 1 title last week after defeating Marlborough Girls’ College 3-0 in the final. They will now play to gain a spot in the top 32 at the New Zealand secondary schools’ championships at the end of the month in Palmerston North with a top-three finish at this weekend’s Canterbury championships. Burnside will be back at full strength for the championships after being without coach Sam Ryburn and key players, Chloe Mikaera and Libby Collett, who have been with the New Zealand team at the under-18 Asian girls’ volleyball championship in China. Meanwhile, the division 2 girls’ title at last week’s Mainland tournament went to Rangi Ruru Girls’ School who beat Waimea B 3-0 in their final. Rangi Ruru volleyball convenor Paula Rule said finishing top of the pool going into the semi-final against Lincoln High School was a great confidence boost for the team.

TRIUMPHANT: St Margaret’s College student Amelia Persson won last week’s South Island secondary schools’ senior girls’ triathlon title in Oamaru. Persson finished the 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run in a time of 1hr 7min 41sec, nearly two minutes clear of her nearest rival. Other locals to taste success in Oamaru included Tayla Hackett from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, who won the intermediate girls’ title, and Pixie Cockerill from Christchurch Girls’ High School, who won the junior girls’ title. In the duathlon, CGHS won the intermediate teams’ event, while Annika Levestam from Cashmere High School won the senior girls’ title. The national secondary school triathlon championships will be held in Wanganui from March 30-31.

The couple had moved up from Timaru a few years ago, but his wife became seriously ill and needed care. Daniel stayed on his own at home for a while, but realised he wasn’t really managing so moved into a resthome elsewhere in Christchurch. Now happily living at Ngaio Marsh, where Shirley receives the hospital care she needs, Daniel, 77, is settled and enjoying life. First thing every morning he dons his dressing gown and goes to visit Shirley. The rest of his day is spent chatting to other residents, reading and relaxing in his room. “I love it here,” he says, “for every reason you could think of. The new menu is absolutely fantastic and the staff are wonderful. They are always smiling. They must be well chosen.”

Another happy resthome resident is Betty Loader, who turned 90 on January 31. She has been at Ngaio Marsh for many years, first moving into a townhouse with her husband, later moving to a serviced apartment as her needs changed, then the resthome, where she now receives hospital care. Her daughter Kay Parry visits her every
day, often at mealtimes. Kay is thrilled with every aspect of the care her mother receives. “I’ve learnt a lot over the last few years,” she says. “Mum has gone through some dramatic health changes and for a while she was bedridden for days. She went from resthome to hospital care, but stayed in the same room, which was wonderful.”

Burnside to defend title By Gordon Findlater BURNSIDE HIGH School will defend their national title in September after winning the Canterbury secondary schools golf championship by the slimmest of margins. At the end of the 18 holes, at Russley, both Burnside and the Christchurch Boys’ High team of Tom Parker, Ben Baker, Tiaki Ogilvie and Kansuke Shin were tied on a score of 224, the three best counting scores from each team. The winner was then determined by the noncounting score, which saw Burnside High win on a countback by just one shot. Juliana Hung anchored Burnside, shooting a round of 72 while Tom Parker (Christchurch Boys’) won

Ensuring a safe work place Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Before the Event
• Buses will be running from McCormacks Bay to both start locations. The first 14km bus will leave at 7.15am, and the last at 8.15am. The first Sport Canterbury 6km bus will depart at 8.30am, and the last at 9.15am. The Sport Canterbury bus drop off point is 800m from Hansens Park.

After the Event
• Buses will operate from the finish line back to the start lines between 10am – 2pm. • A free shuttle will operate from Ferrymead Playing Fields (finish area) back to McCormacks Bay if you parked there. • Need to buy a bus ticket on the day? There will be limited sales – we recommend you plan ahead and book online: City2surf.co.nz.
